When was İstanbul Şehir University established?
İstanbul Şehir University emerged out of the academic search guiding the Foundation for Sciences and Arts since 1986. Starting out as a true “trust fund university,” Şehir began its foundation work in the year 2007. The University acquired “public identity” on May 31st, 2008 and began its activity on June 1st, 2008. It will receive its first students in September 2010.
Where is İstanbul Şehir University?
Our university will begin education in the 2010-2011 Academic Year in the Altunizade Campus.
What are the requirements for enrollment in İstanbul Şehir University?
As the other universities in Turkey İstanbul Şehir University accepts students to its undergraduate programs with the exams held by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center) and the placement which follows.
Which departments exist at the university? What are the score types?
What is the necessary score for placement in İstanbul Şehir University?
As you may know, the base scores of universities are the scores of the students who are the last to be placed in the departments. Since İstanbul Şehir University will receive students for the first time this year, none of the departments have base scores. Next year’s base scores will be determined by the students choosing to attend our university this year.
Does the university have two year Associate Degree programs?
In the 2010-2011 Academic Year, İstanbul Şehir University does not offer Associate Degree programs.
Is it possible to apply for transfer to İstanbul Şehir University from another university?
In the Fall Term of the 2010-2011 Academic Year, the university will not accept students through transfer. In the following terms information on transfer applications will be posted on our website.
Is it possible to apply for vertical transfer to İstanbul Şehir University from two year Associate Degree programs?
The university does not accept students through vertical transfer.
Is there a department which accepts students through special talent examination?
The university has programs which accept students through the TM, MF and TS score types. We do not have a department which accepts students through special talent examination.
Does İstanbul Şehir University have graduate programs?

What is the language of education at the university?
The language of education is primarily English. However, in order to improve the students’ abilities to understand, read, write and communicate in Turkish, each term one of the basic courses wil be conducted in Turkish. In addition, an important number of the elective courses will be in Turkish.
What is the annual tuition?
The tuition for students enrolled in the 2010-2011 Academic Year is 20.000 TL tax included, 17.000 TL for students placed in the School of Language- English Preparation program. In tuition payments, six equal installments are possible, three in the first (fall) semester and three in the second (spring) semester to be paid on the established dates, one installment being paid in the beginning of each semester during registration renewal.
Is it possible to be on scholarship at the university?
Half of the students placed in İstanbul Şehir University this year are on full scholarship, one third of them are on 50 % scholarship. In order to receive scholarship, it is necessary to enter the code numbers of the departments with scholarship on the ÖSYM selection forms and to be placed in the scholarship programs by ÖSYM. In addition, there are discount opportunities such as first choice, advance payment discount, sibling discount, discount for graduates of international degree programs such as IB, Matura and Abitur.
Does the university have international connections? Will it be possible to benefit from student exchange programs in the future?
At ŞEHİR, everybody will have a passport. Because it is important for us that our students have international experience. We will encourage our students to spend at least one term of their studies abroad. With dual agreements signed and to be signed by our university, it wil be possible to spend a term in countries such as U.S.A, Japan and Russia. So far we have signed cooperation protocols with two of the world’s leading universities, University of Wisconsin and George Mason University. Our students may continue their education in the leading universities of Europe with the Erasmus Exchange Program, have their first work experience in any one of the European Union nations with the Erasmus Scholarship Program, spend a term in a different university in Turkey with the Farabi Internal Exchange Program.
Will İstanbul Şehir University accept students from other countries?
International students can apply to our university. We have a quota of 30 international students, 3 students for each undergraduate program. In this way, our university will be a multilingual and multicultural environment.
Are there double major and minor programs at İstanbul Şehir University?
The Double Major Program abbreviated as ÇAP gives students the opportunity to receive degrees from two departments. In the minor program, the students may acquire a certificate supporting the major area of study with less work load.

Can I receive credit for courses I took at the university where I was previously enrolled?
For exemption from courses taken previously, the course exemption demand made after enrollment in our university will be evaluated and the decision will be made accordingly.
What is the faculty to student ratio at the university?
İstanbul Şehir University is structured as a true research university. As a result, faculty with decreased course load will have enough time and opportunity to work in their own fields. The faculty to student ratio at ŞEHİR is 1 to 3. This means that for every three students there is one faculty member.
Will I be given a computer when I enroll in the university?
We give free laptop computers to each of our students. By means of the laptop computers our students will benefit from high technology along with the courses.
What are the library opportunities? Will we have free access to the library?
We are designing Turkey’s largest university library, with a rich collection ranging from rare manuscripts to electronic publications. The ŞEHİR library will be at the center of social life, the most productive and enjoyable place to spend time. Our students will have free access to the library.
