Prof. Kemal Karpat, the World-renowned Historian, is in the ŞEHİR Board of Trustees

Prof. Kemal Karpat, one of the historians who is the expert in Ottoman and Turkey history, was appointed as a member of the ŞEHİR Board of Trustees.
Prof. Kemal Karpat, the lecturer in the History department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of our University since its establishment, was appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees.
In 2011, Prof. Karpat, who is one of the historians that know the Ottoman and Turkey history best, donated his collection of more than 4,000 books, journals and notes to İstanbul Şehir University Library.
Prof. Karpat visited our University in April and gave a seminar to the students of the History Department and then toured our Library and the archive.
İstanbul Şehir University Board of Trustees, the presidency of which is held by Prof. Ömer Dinçer, includes Zeynep Bodur Okyay, Kale Group Head and CEO, Vahap Küçük, CEO of LC Waikiki and Haluk Dortluoğlu, CFO of BİM as well as Prof. Aziz Sancar, the Nobel Laureate scientist.
About Kemal Karpat:
Kemal Karpat received his undergraduate degree from Istanbul University, Department of Law (1947) and completed his MA degree in Political Sciences in Washington University and his PhD degree in Political and Social Sciences (1957) in New York University.
Following his duty at the United Nations Economic and Social Council, he served as a lecturer and director at educational institutions such as Montana State, New York, Princeton, Bilkent, Middle East Technical, Ankara, Harvard, John Hopkins, Colombia, and Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales. He was the head of the Middle Eastern Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin and the director of The Turkish Studies Association and Turkish Research Institute. He was the founding chairman of the Central Asian Studies Association and then, the coordinator of the Central Asian Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin. Among his numerous published articles and books, some of his recent books are: Balkanlarda Osmanlı Mirası ve Ulusçuluk (Ankara: İmge, 2004), Ottoman Population, 1830-1914: Demographic and Social Characteristics, (Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1985), Studies on Ottoman Social and Political History (Leiden: Brill, 2002), Studies on Turkish Politics and Society (Leiden: Brill, 2004), İslâm'ın Siyasallaşması: Osmanlı Devleti'nin Son Döneminde Kimlik, Devlet, İnanç ve Cemaat (İstanbul: İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2004).
