Coronavirus (COVID-19) Announcement from İstanbul Şehir University Rectorate

Dear ŞEHİR members,

Coronavirus (COVID-19), which first appeared as a pneumonia case in Wuhan, China on December 31, 2019, and officially named on January 7, 2020, is a serious flu epidemic that threatens public health. As the University Administration, it is our primary duty to ensure the maximum protection of the students and employees of our university from this epidemic.

After the emergence of the first cases in Turkey on March 11, 2020, it was vitally necessary for İstanbul Şehir University Senate to make following decisions and take necessary actions in line with the announcements of Higher Education Council and the Ministry of Health.

These decisions will be valid until further notice.

Educational Activities

Academic courses at İstanbul Şehir University will continue as planned in the academic calendar in accordance with the explanations made by Turkish Ministry of Health. In the course of time, further decisions will be taken where necessary.

Past International Trips

All full-time and part-time faculty, staff and students who returned from an international trip as of 1 March 2020, are supposed to meet following requirements from the date they return Turkey:

  • inform regarding the country they just visited, duration of visit and date of return
  • follow the 14-days isolation rule
  • Faculty and staff will be on administrative leave for 14 days whereas students will be exempted from attendance (all necessary documentation to be submitted).
  • Based on the warnings of the Ministry of Health, these individuals should refer to the closest Family Health Center, return home to complete a 14-day self-isolation immediately upon arrival in Turkey based on measures proposed by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health. Try to stay at home unless otherwise needed. Should there be a change with health conditions, go see a doctor in relevant health institutions. Our students staying in the dormitory should plan the isolation process by discussing it with the Dormitory Supervisor.
  • These rules also apply to visitors coming from outside.

Planned Trips

We request all full-time and part-time faculty, staff and students to cancel all their international travels for purposes such as international meetings, Erasmus mobility, touristic trips, etc. Please note that this decision aims to avoid problems that might occur on your way back to Turkey as well as within the countries visited. In case of a compulsory trip to a foreign country, please inform Rectorate via

We recommend that you restrict all domestic travels unless it is mandatory. In case of domestic travel planning, air travel should be avoided.

Submit your annual leave requests to the supervisor you are affiliated with and to the Office of Human Resources and Quality Coordination by stating the place of residence during your stay.

Event Planning

All the events planned to be organized at our university (all conferences, symposiums, workshops, seminars, all events that will include local or foreign speakers and audiences outside our university community, career events, student club events, etc.) have been canceled until further notice.
