The Master's Program in Modern Turkish Studies (MTS) at İstanbul Şehir University is a product of the rich experience and intellectual capacities of the affiliated faculty with the Center for Modern Turkish Studies. MTS makes use of interdisciplinary perspectives, theories and methodologies supported by a distinguished core faculty with well-known research achievements on Turkey. Its main objective is to meet the growing needs for a credible knowledge by promoting comprehensive understanding of Turkey. MTS also aims to encourage visible and leading-edge academic voices regarding Turkish studies.
The MTS Master's program of the İstanbul Şehir University aims at attracting ambitious and curious students with a goal of developing analytical skills for thinking and discussing critically, and carrying out important research that contributes to the field of Turkish Studies. Our Center, as a multidisciplinary research institution in Turkey, focuses on qualified academic research that covers extensive topics from the history of Modern Turkey to politics, society and culture of contemporary Turkey.
With unique interdisciplinary and flexible curriculum, MTS offers students a broad range of courses and seminars on several academic topics including democracy problems, religion and politics, civil-military relations, sociology of contemporary Turkish society, conflict resolution, issues in Turkish foreign policy, identity politics, and modern Turkish intellectual thought. Due to its international and multicultural environment - more than 25 % of student body coming from 90 different countries-, MTS program offers Turkish language courses at all levels together with complementary languages Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Kurdish and Armenian.
The program offers unique advancement opportunities. Graduates will be competitive candidates for PhD programs in related fields of the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, History and associated disciplines. The MA degree in MTS is also likely to enhance the career prospects of students for employment in the public sector (diplomacy and various national and international bureaucratic positions), the private sector (consultancy, international business, media, tourism), and international institutions and NGOs.
Modern Turkish Studies MA program comprises of eight courses including seminar (21 credits and 120 ECTS) and a MA thesis. In order to graduate, students should take three compulsory courses and four elective courses. Students are required to get one course from methodology cluster and two courses from compulsory cluster and a seminar. Turkish language courses highly recommended to the international students.
Students are obligated to write a MA thesis of a reasonable length to receive the MA degree. MA thesis will be undertaken either in the spring or summer semester.
Students must score a minimum of 3.00 grade point average (GPA) to graduate.
Duration of studies: Two years. Title awarded: Master of Arts (M.A.)

Scholarships usually cover the maximum expected program duration (of four semesters). Any student who has successfully completed his/her coursework within given semesters, but who needs additional thesis completion time, may, upon applying to the program, be granted a fifth semester without any scholarship, but subject to the payment of a smaller retainer's fee instead of normal tuition.
Application conditions for Modern Turkish Studies MA program offered by İstanbul Şehir University are determined by the respective Faculties in line with the specific requirements of the program. It runs under the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The application process is as follows: Applicants need to upload their documents to the online system. Documents submitted to the University go through a screening process. Applications for graduate programs are evaluated by the Admissions Committee. If needed, the candidates meeting the minimum application criteria are called for an interview which is held in English. For Turkish and international applicants who are abroad and unable to attend interview, will be interviewed through Skype. The Admission Commitee then decides which students to be admitted. Admission is finalized by the approval of the the Board of Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee and the announcement is made to the applicants.
Warning! All REQUIRED documents must be submitted before the application deadline. Applications with incomplete documents will not be taken into consideration. RECOMMENDED documents are not obligatory, but will be influential in the review process. It is the applicant's responsibility to submit the applicaiton on time with all the required documents.
Attention! All the application documents become the property of İstanbul Şehir University. It is suggested to keep the original reports of English proficiency exam score, and apply with the copies of those test scores. Please note that original copies should be submitted upon admission and enrollment.
1. Online Application Form
Candidates can apply to the MA in Modern Turkish Studies program via the online system. Candidates will apply more than one program under the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. A separate application form should be filled out for each program to which a candidate wishes to apply.
2. Official Transcript
An official transcript, preferably sealed, issued by the Student Affairs unit of the applicant's previous university should be submitted. This document should indicate all the courses taken and the grades received by the applicant. GPA must be min. 2,5/4,0 or 65/100.

4. Two Letters of Recommendation:
These should be either submitted online or posted in a sealed envelope.
5. One Photograph:
One photo is needed to upload online application form.
6. Statement of Purpose:
Applicants are expected to present a statement of purpose. Applications will not be taken into consideration without the statement of purpose.
7. Result for Graduate Program Entrance Exam:
This criteria is only for Turkish and TRNC applicants. Non-Turkish applicants are exempted from this criteria.
The applicant must submit one of the following exam's result during application. Applications without a valid exam result will not be taken into consideration. Photocopies of the scores are accepted for application, but original copies should be submitted upon admission and enrollment.
ALES / e-ALES / GRE Turkish candidates should submit one of these exams' results during application.
ALES / e-ALES 55 - Verbal weight GRE 149 - Quantitative
After the test date, ALES / e-ALES / GRE scores are valid for 3 years.
8. Language Certificate
Şehir English Proficiency Examination (STEP) or one of the documents with exam scores accepted by our University should be submitted during application; applications without these documents will not be taken into consideration. (YDS/E-YDS/YÖKDİL/TOEFL/). Original copies will be requested upon registration in the case of admission.
TOEFL-IBT: 90 (each part min. 22 points) or STEP
After the test date, TOEFL IBT scores are valid for 2 years; e-YDS, YDS, KPDS and ÜDS scores are valid for 5 years.
İstanbul Şehir Univeristy graduates are exempted.
9. Writing Sample: (Recommended)
Applicants are expected to present a writing sample like essay, article, thesis, etc. It is not obligatory but will be influential in the review process.
Students are required to complete one course from the methodology cluster.
Students are required to complete two courses from the following list below.

External Elective: Courses offered by the graduate programs of Istanbul Şehir University.
