Omneya Abdelsalam

Omneya Abdelsalam is a professor of Accounting & Islamic Finance at the University of Durham and the founding director of the El Shaarani Ethical Finance  Research Centre at Durham University since 2015.  Previously she established and led the EIBF Research Centre for Islamic Business & Finance at Aston University, Birmingham, UK. She has been a fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (Part of Advance Higher Education) since 2004. Her department is ranked from the top 100 in the world (QS ranking by subject).  This reflects dedication in providing world-class teaching and research programs. Her research interests focus on the applications of ethics in organizations.  In particular, it covers the measurement and reporting of organizations’ ethical performance, ethical governance, corporate social responsibility and moral accountability in the contexts of both Shariah-compliant and conventional organisations. Her research is interdisciplinary in nature as it explores the interaction between religion, social norms, politics and finance and applies a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques.  Professor Abdelsalam published in top internationally ranked academic journals.  Her research papers are well read nationally and internationally and frequently ranked by Science Direct and other platforms from the top downloaded. Her research attracted significant number of citations and impacted standards-setters, corporate policies, researchers and businesses in the field. She has been successful in attracting funding for her research, which has been used in pursuing advanced research questions that aim to facilitate a deeper understanding of Ethics and Sustainability in organizations. She is currently the Islamic Finance Subject Editor for the Journal of International Capital Markets, Institutions and Money.  She also served as Co-Editor in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Orgnization for Special Issues. In addition, she is Associate Editor for Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal. Her contribution to academia has been recognised by receiving many awards such as: the Outstanding Reviewer Award, 2017, Best paper award, (Academy of International Business), 2013, Award for Innovation and Inspiration (Aston University), 2009, Excellence in teaching award (Aston University), 2005.
