​​​Overview​​​​

The Master's Program in Modern Turkish Studies (MTS) at İstanbul Şehir University is a product of the rich experience and intellectual capacities of the affiliated faculty with the Center for Modern Turkish Studies. MTS makes use of interdisciplinary perspectives, theories and methodologies supported by a distinguished core faculty with well-known research achievements on Turkey. Its main objective is to meet the growing needs for a credible knowledge by promoting comprehensive understanding of Turkey. MTS also aims to encourage visible and leading-edge academic voices regarding Turkish studies.

The MTS Master's program of the İstanbul Şehir University aims at attracting ambitious and curious students with a goal of developing analytical skills for thinking and discussing critically, and carrying out important research that contributes to the field of Turkish Studies. Our Center, as a multidisciplinary research institution in Turkey, focuses on qualified academic research that covers extensive topics from the history of Modern Turkey to politics, society and culture of contemporary Turkey.

With unique interdisciplinary and flexible curriculum, MTS offers students a broad range of courses and seminars on several academic topics including democracy problems, religion and politics, civil-military relations, sociology of contemporary Turkish society, conflict resolution, issues in Turkish foreign policy, identity politics, and modern Turkish intellectual thought. Due to its international and multicultural environment - more than 25 % of student body coming from 90 different countries-, MTS program offers Turkish language courses at all levels together with complementary languages Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Kurdish and Armenian.

The program offers unique advancement opportunities. Graduates will be competitive candidates for PhD programs in related fields of the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, History and associated disciplines. The MA degree in MTS is also likely to enhance the career prospects of students for employment in the public sector (diplomacy and various national and international bureaucratic positions), the private sector (consultancy, international business, media, tourism), and international institutions and NGOs.

Modern Turkish Studies MA program comprises of eight courses including seminar (21 credits and 120 ECTS) and a MA thesis. In order to graduate, students should take three compulsory courses and four elective courses. Students are required to get one course from methodology cluster and two courses from compulsory cluster and a seminar. Turkish language courses highly recommended to the international students.

Students are obligated to write a MA thesis of a reasonable length to receive the MA degree. MA thesis will be undertaken either in the spring or summer semester.

Students must score a minimum of 3.00 grade point average (GPA) to graduate.

Duration of studies: Two years. Title awarded: Master of Arts (M.A.)

The degree is awarded upon successful completion of the program's requirements.

Language of instruction: English.

Program Details 

  • Total Courses: 8 Courses - 3 required (two program elective, one course from methodology cluster), 4 elective and a seminar. Total ECTS: 120
  • Students need to write an MA thesis of a reasonable length to receive the MA degree.

  • Program Elective: Courses offered by the program and other courses listed in the program elective group.
  • External Elective: Courses offered by the graduate programs of Istanbul Şehir University.

Scholarships

Scholarships usually cover the maximum expected program duration (of four semesters). Any student who has successfully completed his/her coursework within given semesters, but who needs additional thesis completion time, may, upon applying to the program, be granted a fifth semester without any scholarship, but subject to the payment of a smaller retainer's fee instead of normal tuition.​
